The shehanai, sarod, sitar or tabla, all share a common vein of filling the
human soul with music that is eternal and secular. When the Veena and the violin
string a varnam, it marks the coming together of similar yet diverse sounds, each
marking its own divinity and identity.
Similarly, Taus (mayuri) is an instrument symbolic of the mayur or peacock and it
stirs the mind with the hues of this royal bird.
Every note on the musical scale, namely, shadja (sa), rishabh (re), gandhar (ga),
madhyam (ma), pancham (pa), dhaivat (dha) and nishad (ni), connote to the
numerous threads that harmoniously form the warp and weft of a 6 yard silk.
The Raagas have a soul-stirring impact on the human mind, enriching and
therapeutic. Amritavarshini is believed to bring in showers of rain when sung and
kedaram and kamboji ushers joy, exuberance, appeal, and passionate exultation.
Sahaana is the quintessential raaga of romance, Behag is folkish and Sri ragam is
auspicious and suddha dhanyasi is all-pervasive. Neelambari soothes the tired spirit
and bhupalam sets beautiful dawn. With umpteen passions and sentiments which
one would the wearer desire? And what qualities would she possess? Which
melody would she render?
